Batches Of Mosquitoes Found In TN Test Positive For West Nile virus: Report

Multiple batches of Mosquitoes discovered in Middle Tennessee have reportedly tested positive for West Nile virus.

The mosquitoes were reportedly trapped in the Crieve Hall neighborhood near the intersection of Edmonson Pike and Holt Road by the Metro Nashville Public Health Department's Pest Management Division, FOX 17 News reports. A separate batch was captured in Goodlettsville near the intersection of West Monticello Avenue and Monticello Avenue was also reported by the health department.

Residents living in and near both areas will receive mosquito protection and prevention information via mail and the Metro Health Department will apply a larvicide to any areas where larvae is believed to be present.

The health department has released the following tips for residents looking to protect themselves against mosquito bites, via FOX 17 News:

  • Limit time outdoors at dusk and nighttime hours when mosquitoes are present
  • Wear mosquito repellent approved by the CDC when outdoors
  • Wear shoes, socks, long-sleeve shirts and pants when outdoors to keep mosquitoes away from the skin
  • Make sure windows and doors have screens and are in good condition
  • Reduce or eliminate all standing water in your yard
  • Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with Gambusia fish
  • Apply mosquito dunks in standing water areas
  • Limit overgrown vegetation, which could be mosquito hiding areas
